BACO
EXCLUSIVITY
: LISTEN TO TRACKS FROM ZANGOMA !
Born in the Comorian island of Mayotte, Baco has been brought up amongst
the beats of the chigoma and biyaya drums and other traditional rhythms,
deep sources of his inspiration.
From the age of 7, the will to try all possible instruments entices him
to play the Gaboussy (traditonal mahorian guitar) especially during the
local feasts and festivals. Then he discovers guitar at 11 years old and
starts enriching his own style from new music influences, Reggae being
one of them. At this time, all the legendary musicians like Bob Marley,
Jacob Miller and others are still alive..
He leaves mayotte when he is 14 to join Moroni, in Great Comore, where
he develops his knowledge of the 6 cords instrument surrounded by many
composers and artists. Living in this new environment makes him be conscious
of his music vocation, and he starts working step by step on his own compositions
/ creations..
He stops covering the great standards of his spiritual masters and starts
composing his own pieces that he will interpret when he is 17.
From these two musical sources of inspiration, one purely traditonal,
the other anchored in modern rhythms, the unique style of Baco was born
: the ZANGOMA.
.
By the age of 18, he joins the Reunion island where he plays continuously
during numerous shows and music festivals.
Being a nomad, craving for new knowledge and relations, he decides to
keep on travelling and heads to France when he is 19.
After 2 years of parisian life, he goes to Marseille and creates the HIRIZ
Band. He participates to the Congress for Peace in geneva, then plays
the first part on famous bands tours (U-Roy in 1989, Kassav and Burning
Spear in 1990) He also plays during the festivals of Istres, Aubagne,
Pau, Toulon, Avignon, Uzes...
Back to Paris in 1991, he creates his own home studio and concentrates
his production efforts on other african artists
Beside that, he starts producing his own records which receive a great
support from the mahorian public, and he fastly becomes one of the most
well known artists from and in Mayotte. In 1994, he participates to the
RFI (Radio France International) discoveries and gets the second prize
attributed to African / Indian Ocean artists.
In 1996, Baco goes back to Reunion and climbs again on local stages while
continuing his work on the european and international market. The same
year, the album MASHAKA is released in the Indian Ocean, and he starts
working on new songs.
He comes back to Paris, a new album ready to be launched (Kara Lala) and
enters on the French Market with the distribution work done by Night &
Day.
In 2000, spotted by the Cobalt company, he records the "Questions"
Album, with the collaboration from various musicians, famous in the Parisian
circle of "world Music". Medias greet the album and the originility
of the compositions with enthousiasm and he soon is considered as an artist
from the Indian Ocean that can't be ignored anymore.
Mondomix and "Mille et une production" then ask this wonderful
music guide to shoot a documentary on the musics of the Indian Ocean "ici
aussi, c'est le monde*" (supported by the FCM, the CNC and the
SACEM) *This is also the world here"
In 2003, he releases an album composed with his rasta brother MANJUL (Baco
meets Manjul / Martyr's Blues).
Then he invests on professional studio equipment, works on documentary
and start working on a new album with Tamamuzik.
